Moisturized skin is happy skin. And moisturized hair is happy hair. Remember those words, Live by those words (especially as it gets colder). For this month’s Allure Sample Society box, I chose a serum that makes skin feel are you kidding me silky as it fades sun spots; a shampoo and conditioner set that’s deeply hydrating (but doesn’t turn you into a grease ball); a trio of warm, sunny fragrances that have nothing to do with moisture but are guaranteed to brighten even the dreariest winter day; and a few more surprises. Now dig in.

Estee Lauder Enlighten Dark Spot Correcting Night Serum
WHAT IT IS: A redness and sun spot fading serum.
WHAT IT DOES: Evens out your skin tone over a period of weeks and helps prevent new spots from forming.
KEY INGREDIENTS: Biomimetic enzyme and plum blossom extract(spot lighteners); dimethooxtoly propylresoricnol(helps prevent new spot) ; resveratrol ferrule (anti-irritant); sodium hyaluronate and sunflower, barley, and cucumber extracts (moisturizers).
HOW IT LOOKS/FEELS/SMELLS: This white serum feels like a super lightweight lotion and has a hint of white-flower scent.
WHY WE LIKE IT: Like many things in life, one of the biggest hurdles in fading dark spots is sticking with the regimen long enough to see results. This serum makes that easy because it feels so great to put on. Not only is it cool and slippery; it’s moisturizing in a truly satisfying way. Like all spot correctors, this one works best when you apply it to clean, bare skin before anything else. (Be sure to smear it all over your face, not just dot it on a spot.) One last note from all the dermatologists we’ve ever interviewed: If you want to give a lightener any chance of working, commit to wearing SPF50 (or higher) every single day. The SPF goes last in your skin-care-layering regimen, by the way.
PRICE: $92.00 FOR 50ML/ 1.7 FL. OZ. : $62.00 FOR 30ML/
Bond No.9 High Line, Chelsea Flowers, and Chinatown
WHAT THEY ARE: Three floral fragrances inspired by three area in downtown New York City.
NOTES: High Line, is a mix of bergamot, purple love grass (yes, that’s a real thing), rhubarb, red-leaf rose, tulip, grape hyacinth, sea moss, bur oak, and musk.
Chelsea Flowers, contains peonies, mimosa, tulips, white hyacinth, magnolia, rose, sandalwood, vetiver, and musk.
Chinatown, blends peach blossom with gardenia, peony, tuberose, cardamom, and spicy woods.
WHY WE LIKE THEM: Like the N.Y.C. park built on old, elevated train tracks, High Line smells like a mix of wood and wildflowers with little hints of sea moss (that’s supposed to be the breeze coming off the Hudson River). It’s subtle and airy and a lot less girlie than traditional floral scents. Chelsea Flowers is inspired by the West Side neighborhood’s flower markets: It’s like a big hug of white flowers with musky undertones that keep it from smelling too froufrou flowery. Chinatown smells nothing like its namesake neighborhood. Instead it’s exotic, warm, and spicy, with a creamy sweetness that makes it one of the most fascinating fragrances we’ve worn and a major hit with our finance.
PRICES: $190 to $270
Loreal Paris Advanced Haircare Total Repair 5 Restoring Shampoo and Conditioner
WHAT THEY ARE: A shampoo and conditioner for dry and damaged hair.
WHAT THEY DO: Cleanse and condition as they counteract weakness, roughness, dullness, and dehydration.
KEY INGREDIENTS: Sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate(cleansers, in the shampoo only) ; amodimethicone, ceramide, and arginine (conditioners and strengtheners)
HOW THEY LOOK/FEEL/SMELL: This creamy white duo smells fruity.
WHY WE LIKE THEM: We don’t expect much in the way of softening and conditioning from shampoo, no matter how big those words are on the label. This one truly surprised us. Yes, it does what every shampoo does - rids your hair of oil and styling gunk - but then it infuses it with moisturizers so potent that your hair looks and feels discernibly smoother and shinier. And the conditioner is as intense as some deep-conditioning masks (which is why those with fine hair will want to use it only once or twice a week, and only on the ends). So what did L’Oreal do so right? We’ll let Jim Hammer, a cosmetic chemist who’s not affiliated with L’Oreal, explain: “ The combination of a patented creamed with cationic polymers and an amino acid complex appears to produce excellent damage-repairing results.” Our formerly fried, over processed hair now looks and feels healthy, shiny, and indulged.
PRICE: $4.99 each
Emi-Jay hair ties
WHAT THEY ARE: Stretchy ribbons to hold back hair.
WHY WE LIKE THEM: These elastics provide a snag free grip and they look as pretty around the base of a ponytail twisted through a messy bun as they do on your wrist. We also love using them to secure freshly blown-out hair, since they don’t leave dents. “These are ingenious, and they were created by two 14 year old girls.” says hairstylist Chris McMillian. “Loop your hair through one and pull out a few face framing pieces to create a messy, sexy ponytail that looks like it’s finished with a small bow.”
PRICE: $6.60 for a pack of three
Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara in Black
WHAT IT IS: A great everyday defining mascara for most; a safely dramatic mascara for those who like a natural kind of drama.
WHAT IT DOES; Makes it seem like you have exponentially more lashes, without any clumps, flakes, or spidery spikes.
HOW IT LOOKS/FEELS: It’s a dark, rich black thanks to kohl pigments in the formula; once it’s dry, your lashes feel fairly soft.
WHY WE LIKE IT: Though the name suggests a vampy formula, Smokey Eye Mascara isn’t superdramtic. Instead, it makes every lash you have - no matter how wispy - thicker and slightly longer in a smooth, beautiful, just north of natural way. The brush is thin, with shorter-than-average bristles and a tapered end, enabling even klutzes to reach and coat the lashes at the inner corners without smudging. The only flaking or smearing we experienced was when we woke from a nap. And eve many waterproof mascaras fail that test.
